Recent Data Trend

India's final ballot will be cast on May 19, 2019, with results to come out on May 23, 2019. In these last few weeks left, we continue to see that on Twitter the mention of BJP and Congress is also closing in. The average count of tweets mentioning BJP and Congress have fallen to 21k and 18k compared to 33k and 28k respectively, in the corresponding week last month. In terms of hashtags, the top trending hashtags for BJP went back to #GoaMining (1927 times) and #RestartGoaMining (1206 times). We had seen that, in the first week of April, the Goa mining issue was trending on Twitter with the hope that the BJP would resolve the problem. In mid-March 2019, the Supreme court ruled that the renewals of the 88 mining leases by the Goa government in 2015 were illegal.

Within the tweets mentioning Congress or Mr Rahul Gandhi, apart from #AbHogaNyay (9331 mentions during May 6-12, 2019) few other trending hashtags were #RajviGandhi (776) and #SikhGenocide (598) since May 10, 2019. On Thursday, PM Narendra Modi accused the former PM Rajiv Gandhi and his family of having used a naval aircraft carrier (INS Viraat) to take their family for a vacation to an island. He alleged Mr Rajiv Gandhi of using naval officers for personal security during that time. After Mr Modi tweeted about the accusation by attaching a magazine article (published in 1998) as proof, the Gandhi family hasn't responded to the allegation as yet. Earlier in the same week, Mr Modi accused Rajiv Gandhi was the "number one corrupt" man in the country when he died. The supporters of Congress, on the other hand, raised their voice on Twitter asking the current leaders to show respect.

Along with this, after PM Modi condemned the Congress party leader's (Sam Pitroda) remark on 1984 anti-Sikh riots and accused the party that they have no value for life, it drew widespread criticism from various leaders. This led #SikhGenocide to be mentioned 598 times on the same day in tweets mentioning Congress party.

The tweets mentioning Mr Modi's interviews with various media houses also garnered BJP top mentions in the list of top hashtags. Overall in the last week, 2606 hashtags included about PM Modi's interview with News Nation and ABP news network.
