Brief Overview

India's export by commodities data is published by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on a yearly basis. It covers all the categories of goods exported from India to other countries. Here we have categorized the commodities according to their HS codes.  The major exports of India are mineral fuel and oils, jewelry, pharmaceutical products, iron and steel, clothing articles etc. In terms of value, the share of Gems and Jewellery in total exports was highest in 2016-17, about 16.1%. Export of mineral products had a share of about 11.1% of total exports in the same year. Since liberalization exports of India have increased manifold. This has been possible because of decreased quantitative restrictions and tariffs. The composition of the export basket has also changed over time. The share of agricultural products has decreased and share of manufactured products has increased. In 2015, India’s share in total world merchandise trade was about 1.6%.
